Hi! My name is Alliefair Scalise and I’m from Buffalo, NY. I am currently a junior Biology/Health major at Grove City College and I am on both my school's varsity swim team and the varsity water polo team. Along with sports, I am also the vice president of my sorority, Sigma Theta Chi, the VP of our campus’s Panhellenic Council, and a member of Grove City’s Pre-Health Society. My most recent involvement on campus, however, has been the apiary research team. Although I have not had any prior bee-keeping experience, I was immediately drawn to this opportunity in hopes to learn more about how influential bees are to our everyday lives. As a biology major interested in going into a health-related profession, I was also intrigued to learn about the different diseases bees can become infected with and the treatment that is available to them.
One of my favorite parts about working on this project over the past two semesters has been being outside and gardening. I spend a lot of time outside back home and this project has provided me with the chance to get outside more at school, which is always a welcomed break from studying. Our research team has claimed a small area behind one of the school's parking lots that we have prepared and is now rich with pollinator friendly flora - perfect for honey bees!
I am so excited to be a part of this team and to have the opportunity to educate more people about how to properly take care of bees. I think implementing an apiary on campus is a great way to educate our community on bees and to show all the benefits healthy bees can have on our environment.
